I have determined that these plates were made in 1939 according to the Royal Doulton backstamp. However I am confused by the mark next to the backstamp. I could not find any other examples of the mark on any other pieces of Royal Doulton.

Is it suppose to be a D? It looks like a hook to me.:confused::confused:

This is the site that helped me determine the date.:happy:

New one on me, and I've a fair bit of Doulton. Someone's logo, I think - hotel or retailer?

I was hoping you would check in on this one, but I am totally bummed that you have no idea about the mark. :(:( Thank you for your input though.:happy:

Is the "Hook" under the glaze or a later applied stamp ??

I have this exact same pattern. The marking on the back of my dishes appears a little different. I also have a 30-35 lb platter that I have not looked at the markings.

Hello, Edie. I think you might get better replies by starting your own thread rather than depending on folks to open up this 3+ year old thread to see your query.

Is there any possibility that your plate originally had a metal handle attached?
ie clipped on opposite edges. I have a small dish with a handle that has the same hook symbol

Hello @Frank Robson & welcome to the forum!!:happy:

    These were definitely dinner plates.

The pattern is shown in the link below.

If you could start your own post with photos of your piece someone might be able to help you.

One thought without seeing photos might be that the metal handle was not original to the piece & was something added after the manufacture of the plate.

Replacements Ltd. routinely adds bamboo handles by drilling holes in the rims of plates & makes multi-tier serving pieces by drilling holes in the centers of plates and then adding metal pieces.
