I do not know anything about this piece other than it was purchased at auction and professionally restored. Any help on what it is and what it is worth would be greatly appreciated.

I can only guess at this point, cannot see it well enough to make any points about it. Will need to see close ups of details, back, bottom, inside drawers and cabinets. It could be old, it could be as new as the 1950s. I suspect the latter.

Where and when was the auction, Laurie?

Beautiful walnut sideboard ca. 1870-80. My guess would be northwest Europe, France or Belgium. We don't typically do valuations since there are so many variables, such as where you're located and how the market for "brown" furniture is in that location. That said, this is a fine piece; in my neck of the U.S. Midwest I'd expect to see a price tag north of $1K, and possibly more depending on the exact location.

I'll bet the restoration cost a grand !

Thank you, we believe he paid 2k to have it restored. Not positive on that.

I believe the auction was near Honesdale PA. It was several years ago. Sorry I can't be more exact.

Agree with Ghopper on age and origin. Value really depends on where and how selling. Here in my semi-rural Midwest area, we had a couple similar, if not even more grand, pieces end up selling for less than $500.00 each at retail. We started prices in the $1500 range and went down from there. They took months to sell and ended up going to out of town dealers for very little money.

Here was one of them..... Was priced at $395.00 when it ultimately sold. I don't know the actual selling price but assume at least 20% off that.

All the above is true. However, I happen to really love brown furniture, especially such as the OP's! Had I a Manhattan loft, I'd move it in ASAP!

Looks Flemish renaissance revival to me. I really like it.

If you want to research what similar pieces sell for at auction, your best bet is liveauctioneers.com. If you sign up for a free account you can search past auction results. Searching under "French Carved Oak Buffet" yields about 900 results. Most seem to be in the $600-$1000 range with some outliers on each side.
