If you have a massive amount of this stuff it may be worth tracking down a dealer in artifacts of this era in your region. You may be able to pay them to come in and identify/authenticate things and give you some price estimates. Sounds like the source doesn’t help to lend any legitimacy to the items as far as authenticity goes. Certainly adds more mystery though.

Yea, finding someone to hard science this stuff locally is tough. If I was in the UK I could probably do that with breakfast. USA finding someone has been nothing but uphill to say the least.

Have been searching for Roman soldier's rings. Not finding any really close match, but the shoulders on this one are something like yours:

It was the shoulders & overall chunkiness of your ring that struck me as more contemporary, but appears such things did come into fashion.

Bactrian is a possibility, if it came from that part of the world.

Is the matrix, the engraved oval, a separate piece that has been set into the ring? Or is it all a single piece?

Getting someone to use scientific methods to authenticate the age would be very difficult I’d imagine, as you said. Finding a dealer with years of experience who could look at the collection and advise you would also not be super easy I’d think. It might be doable with some time and legwork though. I’d think a dealer would be your best bet. I bought some things online years ago off what I believe is a pretty well regarded dealer in Native American artifacts. I had some questions about a couple things I owned. After exchanging some msgs about the things I bought I asked if I could bounce some things off of him and he obliged. There’s also a dealer in Oceanic antiques online that I ask for help sometimes. These are only the occasional queries with a couple photos so they haven’t charged me anything. Someone assessing a whole collection would likely charge, unless they think you might consign the collection through them in the future. Good dealers know their stuff though, sometimes better than credentialed experts possibly. That may be the way to go. If you put the time in you might find someone in your region that would take a look. Just my two cents on what I’d probably do in your position.

If you are near a university, you may be able to access the library which would have a lot of historical, anthropological and art history information (librarians can help with where and what to search in the catalogue) so you might get more info that by merely googling. Just a suggestion if you've got time on your hands! Otherwise, I agree with others: much might be sorted quickly by a reputable dealer and then you can concentrate on the less easily identified items.
