It must be a maker's mark.

Thanks for the reply! How should I go about finding out who the maker is?

    Found this on the web...........https://www.inthefashionjungle.com/what-does-av-mean-on-jewelry/

"What does AV mean in jewelry?
AV is one of the import marks that were used from 1867 until 1922. AV stands for Auslandsverkehr which means foreign goods. So, it is a maker’s mark that implies the jewelry was manufactured in foreign countries."

That clasp doesn't appear to date from the 1867-1922 period. I think a maker's mark more likely.

This is an international forum. Why don't you tell us in what part of the world you acquired the bracelet and what you were told about it? It would also be helpful if you posted a photograph of the entire piece.

AV could mean the jeweller is located in the Avellino province of Italy, but province marks are usually in a cartouche.

Definitely looks Italian to me. Maker may not have much relevance to value.

Well, I'd think 1990s on when lobster claw clasps became ubiquitous.

Agree re unimportance of maker. A generic design. Value in the gold.

As a general guideline, expect to get 55 to 75 percent of the total gold value (assuming the piece is in good shape). So, if your necklace contains about $420 worth of gold, a fair offer would be $231 to $315. Another way to calculate it is to reduce the per-gram value by 25-45 percent.

    what does yours weigh?

oh, and the guideline sucks...... u can do better with an honest scrapper !

Sorry everyone I just had time to read through all the replies.

This was my mothers we lost her in January and I’m cataloging all the items that we got from her and making a book with all the info for my kids I am not really interested in monetary value more wanting to k ow exactly where the piece came from.

we don’t even know what year she bought it but having more info on the piece will be better than nothing. I can pass the info to my kids and them to theirs

    Sorry for your loss !!!

Having lost both my folks , 3 weeks apart in 2017....let me just say this...

I wear my Moms gold neck chain..when I golf !
it reminds me of her...and keeps her with me on the golf course where she loved to be.....

It would mean nothing to my daughter !!

Now, if u have items for your Mom that she wore in front of the kids...or had since she was married...or are special in some way.....those are the keepers ...those the kids may respect.........the rest will not be seen by them......with your heart and eyes.

    My 2 cents..

Agree, without the complete mark it is unlikely to be a province mark. A manufacturer, one of many in Italy.
    Ditto.

I am sorry for your loss, Forest.
As komo said, the necklace may mean more to you than to your kids, so it is for you to remember her by and enjoy wearing, if it fits you
