This was a 99p smash and grab yesterday. Looks to be hand painted. So far struggling to identify it. It has a couple of impressed marks on the base but not too legible. The one in the middle is a lozenge. Looks like a IV in the top section 13 on the right, 3 at the bottom and 11 on the left. I can't make out the numeral/letter below the IV.

The other impressed mark Looks like four characters.

The diamond shaped impressed mark is a British registry "kite" mark. Since it's illegible, you won't be able to decipher the mark. The other impressed mark may be the factory, but looks unreadable to me. The red numbers are a pattern number. However, it is likely made by one of the many Staffordshire companies in the second half of the 19th c. This one c. 1870 IMHO.

You can google British registry marks or kite mark and maybe you can get some idea from what you can read.

Thanks. I think they only tell you the date of the item and what material it is made from dont they. The other mark might be legible if it weren't for the crazing.

I will try Google image search again.

I have found a very similar one which is minton but the mark doesn't seem to be one of theirs

Yeah. I love the two little characters bobbing along in the boat

There is something off in the diamond info me thinks.

If it's numbers on the right and bottom then it should be a letter on the left (and also a letter under the IV). If it's a number on the left then there should be a letters on the right and bottom (and a number under the IV).

Perhaps you can make out what they may be based on those parameters.

I've tried guessing and looking up the dates and registrations on dates but I'm just guessing. I can't make out anything at all from the diamond mark in the photos.

Okay I will ha e another look. It is very tricky though. You have to catch it just right in the light.

The one on the left could well be an M. Other than that I am unsure about the rest.

Try holding the plate to a bright light and reading the mark as it shines through. This has worked for me.

Well stuff me sideways. No sun in Manchester today so I used my 100W LED wall light, and behold...

Godden says ambrose Smith 1784 - 1786. Isn't that too early for lozenge marks?
