Featured Help with early 20th c.Pastel Drawing Framed in Netherlands

The name on back makes little sense unless it's a customer's or framer signing his work,if it's a customer it could be a violinist also

 

I do think the name is the owner (a guess, of course) but the violinist died in 1913, so...

 

Hum... Not sure (re '20s.) This seems to say the business opened November 1, 1930. Of course, my Dutch is rusty (aka non-existent.) Lists some artists he worked with.

You know... She could be wearing boots, rather than pumps, which would move date back.

Maybe she's standing on her toes (a little)

 

You know... there does seem to be a black line going up the middle of her foot...

 

It appears rather unfinished to me, perhaps something in between a portrait and a quick sketch.

 

High heeled boots in the snow ??? .... Joy.

 

I saw this when first posted & my attention was grabbed by the footwear too. Reading comments & reexamining pic, I think two-tone boots, not high heeled & not on tiptoe, just at the point in walking daintily when weight is mostly on front foot & back foot about to push off.

 

Because people, dressing for a special evening out, never wear the wrong shoes for the weather?

 

Because high heels as we know them did not exist when this lady went stepping out for the evening. Boots were the norm. That's why so many button hooks are still floating around.

 

I would describe it as a sketch as well. But amateur by no means.

German Expressionism used bold colours to create a different reality, which is something I don't really see here.
My first impression was, this is influenced by Isaac Israëls, a The Hague painter of the late 19th-early 20th century.
Dutch painters in those days were much more associated with Belgian and French artists than with Central European ones.

The advertisement for those boots look to be very definate high heels !!! ... Joy.

 

Not by today's standards. But definitely not ideal for snow. I always laugh when I see news footage of Melania & some poor wife of a visiting dignitary having to pick their way across a lawn for a photo op.

Johnny signed it JM first. His wife liked it so much she wanted to frame it. She said he should sign it with his first name, so her friends would believe he really did sketch it.
