Featured A L Barye repro bronze dog

hi folks, something else i found at the boot

i'm under no illusion to the fact that its probably a repro of some kind (but only £3)

i didnt even see the mark, or know the mark

just think bull terriers are fascinating looking

its defo a non-ferrous metal and marble or stone base (both tested)

but the screws and base dont look at all that old to me at all

88 painted on bottom

cant find any other examples of bull terriers by him

any age at all ?

any thoughts or info appreciated

 

This is by Alfred Barye (1839 - 1882) a French sculptor.

It looks genuine to me.

Dogs, horses, elephants, lions etc are some of his subjects.

 

This is another dog by Barye. It seems your dog is lacking some of the detail this one has. So, right now I'm not so sure if your specimen is the real thing .

 

Yeah I'd be very surprised if it was an original, I think his work is highly reproduced

Odd that I can't find another one though

 

Some of them seem to make good money even when they are stated as brand new

Yours is a modern looking English Bull Terrier Charlie not looking like this in Baryes time. They used to look like this. The skull has changed so much, it’s hard to see one out and about with its mouth closed now. I know because I sculpted one and it was very difficult to cast with an open mouth.
