I always wonder what was going on in the minds of those that repaired these. Don't get me wrong a love them. Were they a family piece that they just could not part with? Were they like my grandparents that could not throw anything out? i collect stick and spatter which this maybe. Why go to such effort to save something like this?

Poverty...which dictates preserving assiduously what has been useful, so that it may continue to serve.
I met a fellow decades ago whose entire eclectic collection of antiques all showed obvious repair; some with refined materials an' skillful labor, others less so but nonetheless returned to serviceability.
I have one example...which I may already have posted here. If not, I will, soon as I find it; a small English red-ware pitcher.

I guess you are right. It would still be usable.

Not just poverty. I’ve had high end ceramics with staple repairs. People treasured their objects.
