...and I thought I'd share. Spirit and Ancestor by Bill Holm through the Burke Museum. I know @all_fakes has personal connections and expertise, and there's lots of others here with knowledge and interest.

The book is a perfect casual read: each 2-pages shows an object and has a 1-page essay commenting on it, including those tangents from which I learn so much.

Anyway. If anybody else has 'go-to' book they'd recommend for the types of objects we see on this forum, I'd love to hear it.

Sure. One can learn a lot from books like this, as well as by attending the exhibitions on which they are usually based. Like Komo, I have a copy of nearly every book available on NW Coast Native art.

It's great that you found such a fascinating book! Bill Holm's "Spirit and Ancestor" through the Burke Museum sounds exciting. It seems to be a real source of inspiration and knowledge. I'm now into reflective essays, found https://edubirdie.com/examples/reflective-essays/ for that. In general, the idea of random reading with objects and comments on two-page pages sounds interesting. So far, I have no recommendations that will suit you. If I write something.

A couple more good book finds from the antique mall: Bill Reid and the Haida Canoe (a companion book to a 2011 exhibition in Vancouver BC) and People of the River about Native artistic traditions along the lower Columbia River, here in my own 'back yard.'
