Featured Fine ? wine

Hi folks

anyone here know their fine wines.

i made a very cheeky bid for this at a local auction and surprisingly won it.

just a gamble really, as i knew nothing about the condition of the contents, or what a shelf life would be for it

the thing i could tell from the photo was that the label looks like it has been in a cellar for a while

i could probably sell the rack for more than i paid for the bottle, think silver plated

think its a 1995 but cant find another like it online

liquid inside looks pretty healthy, not cloudy

but dont even know if its drinkable

any thoughts or info appreciated

 

I love Barolo. Taste of violets. Should be drinkable but depends upon how it's been stored.

Clearly 1991 labelled vintage. Not necessarily bottled or released that year.

Charlie, your Italian is rusty. It's a presentation bottle. "Dedicato al lancio della nouva Fiat del settembre 1995" or "Dedicated to the launch of the new Fiat in September 1995."

I'm off the booze for the foreseeable future, don't even know how you would go about trying to sell booze

 

You could try selling it to a local wine merchant or restaurant. I think Ebay allow certain alcoholic items but not sure. You wouldn't want it bouncing about in a royal mail van though. A bottle of barolo that is a couple of years old sells for about £10 in ALDI so your 40 year vintage is worth a fair few more quid than that. It should be fine as long as the cork isn't damaged/dried out and the only way to find out is crack it open. I would. Wine is to be tasted and not looked at.

Wine can be sold on eBay. Or you can assign it to a wine auctioneer. The FIAT connection may give it special interest. You'd want to do research and see what FIAT model was introduced that year.

Plenty of vigneto lonchetta vintage barolo on Google but nothing near the 1990s . Nearest I can find is 1979.

Thanks for the info mate. Don't quite understand why they describe vintage wines as passed their best, but it sells for so much more

 

It's hard to tell when a wine has passed it's best. It's a bit hit and miss but also as debora said, how it is stored. If you keep it in your kitchen in top of a cupboard, the temperature fluctuations wont do it any favours at all. If you keep it at a cool steady temperature it can just improve. Not sure how long it will improve for and at what point it starts festering. I guess every wine is different as it is a complex chemical development. My mate bought a couple of 40 yo vintages for Christmas a while ago and they were just rank. Every off flavour you can imagine. I think some people must just collect them like others collect antiques, just to marvel at.

 

OMG! Barolo is so much more than Yum!
