Hi all, I’m hoping someone can help date this old family photo from the dress or hair/ facial growth styles. It is a copy so nothing of use on the photo itself. many thanks

Assuming the image was taken in the U.S. ... The women all appear to be wearing versions of the pompadour hairstyle which generally dates it to sometime between the 1890s and World War I. Given the wider shoulders, natural waists, slight pigeon bodices and puffed sleeves, I'd think the first decade of the 1900s. Edwardian era.

However, I'm not an expert. You'll want other opinions.

I agree with @Debora - a date around 1900. But I might place it a little earlier, in the 1890s, based on what can be seen of the men's coats. None of the gentlemen appear to be wearing frock (long) coats, which might be expected for special occasions earlier in the 19th century. Most of the coats are shorter, button high, and have small notched lapels, which is consistent with late 19th/early 20th century style. But the fellow in the center wears an older style with a wider lapel and buttoning lower down.

"Worn as part of a suit, jackets varied over time as well as time of day and occasion. While wide lapels ruled mid century by the 1880s lapels became narrow and jackets buttoned high. In the 1890s, jacket sleeves were short enough to reveal the lower part of shirt cuffs."

Cuffs are visible on the 3rd man from the left, but the "sack coat" worn by the fellow on the right looks rather loose fitting, with sleeves too long to show off any cuffs.

The mix of styles may reflect differences in status, and/or the ability to purchase the latest in men's wear.

What are the two ladies on the outside holding? A shepherd's crook?

I agree with late 1890s to very early 1900s date. The women's dress collars and sleeves date to that time.

(I'm still on a trip and don't have references here.)

I did find a couple old wedding photos with crooks so answered my own question I guess.

Bendigo, Victoria, 1905, Wedding party and guests. The bridesmaids (?) all carry shepherd's crooks with flowers attached.

Portrait photo of wedding group at Swindon, Wiltshire, England in the 1920s or 1930s. The bridesmaids are wearing imitation Dutch hats, and the boy page is possibly wearing a Pierrot costume. The garlanded crooks refer to the romantic shepherd-and-shepherdess tradition which dates from the 18th century. From a postcard deposited at Swindon Record Office

Many thanks all, I also have this shot with what I’m sure is the same man in the group shot (third from left). He looks maybe 10—15 years younger here.
They are family shots and we’ve lost the history so I’m trying to determine dates to help identify them. Dates I have for the weddings I’m thinking might relate are either 1875, 1902 and 1916….but could be others of course.
    Oh and it’s in Australia.
Does this give any further clues? Many thanks

At a glance, I'd think that late 1880s/early 1890s. High collar, natural waist, narrow sleeves and hair worn on top of head with curls.

Thanks again Debora, so it sounds like 1875 is unlikely, but perhaps 1902 is a possibility if they were behind in fashions in Oz??

    The
The Bendigo one is so similar it’s making me think the group shot is the 1902 wedding.

In 1902, she would have worn a pouter pigeon waist, a silhouette so exaggerated that it would have made the dress above immediately old-fashioned.

It might be difficult to assign a firm date based on a wedding dress, as a daughter might wear an older dress handed down from mother or grandmother for the occasion.
