    look at what Deb says.....
nothing on the wall...or shelf....a lone candle , crock pot and spartan furniture...no jewelry , a lone carpet on a bare wood floor...and she's peeling apples....

I see depression......even though she's dressed as nice as she can.....

    do I make sense ?;)

This is not by any stretch a 1930s scene. Look at her clothes.

The artist has captured the light from the candle perfectly all round the room. Really well worked painting. Nice find.

The subject, besides being a lovely woman, looks well-nourished. Methinks she is the under-cook (as in sous chef), in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gotrocks. In the little room off the kitchen, she is preparing Apple Crisp for tonight's dessert, and the accoutrements of the room are as they would have been in most great houses.

Although electricity is known and used, certain people (known as "die-hards") prefer maintaining the old ways of their ancestors...hence the candle in the servant's quarters.

(Well, I just couldn't leave her there, sweltering in poverty!)

I like it. It is amazing how many differences we all see with this work of art.
I see a woman tired, not being able to keep her eyes open much longer, trying to prepare a cobbler, pie etc and wanting to retire for some slumber soon.

    She's gonna make apple pie!
And I think she's using a foot warmer.
