    Hi, Folks-
Can anyone please tell me how to tell if this jacket is for a man or woman? The maker is Mid Western of Berlin, Wisconsin and the size is 36. I'd also like to know what time period this coat was made. Thanks for any thoughts on this. Appreciate it. DSCN4526.JPG DSCN4527.JPG DSCN4528.JPG DSCN4529.JPG DSCN4530.JPG

Women's clothes button on the left. I'd think it was 1960s.

That's why it's always helpful to see clothing on hangers rather than flat. 1970s would likely mean a long, lean silhouette with exaggerated lapels. 1980s would likely mean a boxier shape with a wider, stronger shoulder. I did research on the brand's label evolution, looked through old catalogs and remain confident with a 1960s attribution.

I was wondering if 36 was a women's sizing for these jackets and went down the rabbit hole of google without finding exactly what I was looking for.

If I understand from what I've read in some "reminiscing" online, it sounds like you could send your hide to this factory and have it made into a jacket, gloves etc. From browsing a few online catalogs, the models were numbered and I think it's possible that 62 or 63 might be the model number of yours based on the 1959 catalog. It also seems like that model number may still have been available into the 1980s though not sure it remained the same design. Might be something to research further.

Hard to read some of the catalogs but here they are.

Agree with it being a women's jacket and the label style indicates 1950s/60s. Their jacket styles changed little over the years.

A photo of it flat, buttoned and with belt tied, would help determine if it matches any of these from a 1959 catalog:

Looking further at the 1987 catalog, I'm thinking it's #63.

I did a cursory look for label dating but didn't find it in a quick look. The 1987 catalog was still using the angled underscore name but don't know about the labels.

It also looks like you could buy ready made or made from your own hide. I wonder if they always used the same label. (no idea)

Thanks so much all for the clever sleuthing. It's a pleasure to learn about the origin of found objects and everybody's take on all that.
