I think it’s a beautiful and unique piece but I’m unsure of how to place a value on a piece like this as I’ve looked far and wide online and can’t find anything similar other than a few on the Sotheby’s website.
it was purchased in a Spanish antique store and is currently being restored there by an excellent restorer so expect it to be in perfect condition once it gets to me.
If I were to pay £1500 for this to be bought restored and imported do you think that would be a sensible purchase or can I find an alternative at a more reasonable price? Thank you all in advance for any help.

great looking frame..........but before I would cough up 1500 pounds of my hard earned money ..........I'd want to first nail down and era and fair market value..

Exactly what I’m trying to do, it’s difficult as it’s hard to imagine this in perfect condition but he’s an excellent restorer who uses original materials only. I believe the mirror to be late 18th century and it’s definitely from Venice.

sometimes , the not perfect condition allows one to inspect the item for process and materials that would help confirm or deny the items age......

    sometime....age is faked !

Yes, I believe the damage is consistent with age in these cases though as the seller seems entirely focused on restoring antiques as opposed to faking antiques. Having seen and touched it in person it certainly looks the real deal.

The style is Rococo, and if it is 19th century it is Rococo Revival. I think it is indeed a Rococo Revival piece, not an 18th century one. Maybe that search term will help you find others.
It is handmade, so you won't find exactly the same, but I'm sure you already know that.

Rococo revival, can you provide any more insight into what that is and the era it’s from? It’s handmade and unique and honestly might be worth a plunge on, definitely seems a safer purchase than sevres hahaha.

Rococo is an 18th century style. The name is derived from 'rocaille', a curly asymmetrical design motif that was first used in the Baroque period.
Rococo came after Baroque, and while rocailles and other curls were used, they were much lighter in look and weight than Baroque. It is more 'frivolous' than the heavy flamboyance of Baroque.

There was a revival of the Rococo style in the 19th century.

Wow amazing, thank you. I’m certainly left interested in this mirror after this thread, much more so than the servers I previously posted. Think it could look amazing in any living room.

Could potentially be worth that. However, I think you would be able to find one similar for less. There are a lot of Rococo revival mirrors available for less than $1000.00. I think the mirror in your other thread more unusual.

Would you recommend any sites out there where I could find this? I’ve looked all over online and can’t find a thing like this for anything less than thousands, but those are original but with damage, this will have to be restored.
i agree the other mirror is more exciting but apparently the glass needs to be replaced with a more accurate replica and it’s also far more expensive both to purchase and ship (triple the price). On the other hand he’s an excellent restorer so I’m sure it would look great.

Cheers my friend. Appreciate the help, if I were to sell this tho I’d probs look at doing it at a set price, where would I best find that. I’ve previously used 1st dibs and sell my antiques but I found nothing.

@Henry SJ ........ u keep referring to this restorer....
& I like your faith in him...
    but...
he'll restore an average item, the same way he'll restore a great item...

but he can never restore an average item...and make it a great item !!!!!!

So......get him a great item to start with !!;);)

    imho...

I agree I do have faith in him but only because I saw his previous restoration which looked absolutely perfect.
While I prefer the other mirror I’m hesitant to spend the required £4000 (minimum) to get it bought, shipped, and restored before I know everything there is to know on the piece.
I personally think this item is great, and also much more reasonable.

If you are using 1st Dibs as a value indicator, you are doing yourself a disservice. 1st Dibs is the highest of the high end, with a very select market. Asking prices are very high and things usually sell at a discount off the asking price. Even so, the selling prices are probably the top 1% of the market. The vast majority of items sell at prices way below those found at 1st Dibs.

The prices found on liveauctioneers are reasonable prices one would expect to pay across a broad spectrum of locations. You can probably throw out the very low prices and chalk them up to a bad day at the auction. The very high prices may also be outliers. However, they could also be for exceptional items at a high end auction house. You kind of need to read between the lines a bit. Retail prices could be higher in some locations.

A good antiques sleuth should be able to find bargains in any market. This is particularly true for items for which there is a lot of stock. The listings for rococo gilt mirrors numbered nearly 9K on live auctioneers. Surely some of those could be considered comparable for you. Even if you were to take some of those prices and double them to account for wholesale vs. retail, chances are that you would still be way below 1st Dibs prices.

Yeh i thought they were high but just put it down to being retail prices over auctions. Cheers for letting me know.
