People seem to grow attached to it very easily, Napoleon never got it either. Vivant-Denon was right to keep it, a wonderful piece. Useful too, nice for jewellery.
AJ-I noticed that.I wonder if Napoleon was exiled on Elba or St Helena when this was about to be delivered ? PS-The backstory on this piece is a bit legendary.If we sold the house we might be able to own it.

I'm surprised they don't tip over forwards, with all that brass. Some of those dudes had to start pinning medals down their trousers because there was no room on the jackets. All I can think is "compensating much?"
I saw it when my mother and I visited Vienna. My mother said: "poor thing, to be confronted with such bad taste right from the start". Mind you, the 'Golden Carriage', which the city of Amsterdam gifted Dutch queen Wilhelmina nearly a century later, is a match when it comes to bad taste. A monstrosity, and now highly controversial as well. It won't be used anymore.
Definitely North Korean, and wearing more brass than a scrapyard sees in a week! That cradle design: muck that cost a pile of brass about describes it. Poor kid!
Of course those aren't the kinds of medals such a cabinet would be meant to hold, but the image did spring to mind.
