I am hoping this will be an easy one for @Any Jewelry. A small drawing/painting (10 5/8" x 13 7/8" - 26.5 x 34.5cm) signed W. Badung, Batuan, Bali. As the provenance is obvious, I am most interested in a possible date, and the character depicted. Many thanks in advance.

It is probably late 20th century. The style is typical for Batuan, with those grey-black shades highlighted with gold. It is my favourite Balinese style.
Most Batuan painters are of the Brahmin caste, and often paint religious scenes.
There are many painters in Batuan, but most are not well-known. W probably stands for Wayan, but I haven't found a W or Wayan Badung.

I am not sure of the character. He has a keris with a grantim hilt, which means he is a member of the nobility. He also has a third eye.
He could be Kumbhakarna, a brother of demon king Ravana. Unlike Ravana, Kumbhakarna is good-natured and is usually depicted without fangs.
In the Ramayana Kumbhakarna ends up helping Rama rescue his wife Sita/Sinta, who had been abducted by Ravanna.

Pleasure, of course. I have had to sort out a few things around here, so I haven't been around much. And now I have to take it easy, so replies can take some time.:turtle:

    Hi
I bought a piece by the same artist in 1982 in Bali. He was a student staying in Kuta. He had a pair to sell and my (then) partner bought the male and I bought the female as they were around $25. I had it for around 20 years before I framed it in a sympathetic style. Same signature etc as piece featured here.
