Featured Korean or Chinese or Japanese? Vase or Squatty Ginger Jar

This poor thing has been through the wringer. Curiosity got the best of me though.

Has indentations suggesting a lid, so perhaps a squatty ginger jar? About 6" tall by 7 inches wide.

Ideas of who made it, is it early as suspected? Wonder what it is depicting. Any info appreciated.

 

I have several similar of different sizes, all supposed to be Chinese.

Mine are mostly not recent. BTW they are food transport containers so they did have a form of lid or wax cover.

 

Chinese Provincial ware, antique storage vessel.
These were mostly made in Fujian, coastal China, for export to SE and S Asia.
Dating them is difficult because they were made in the same style for a long time, but it is at least 19th century.

 

I assume that these are extremely common and don't command a high price even if complete/in good shape?

 

They used to be, but of course many broke while used. Which means that they are not as common anymore.
I used to see them for about $200.

With the damage its value is mostly decorative of course, but decorative it certainly is. And educational.

 

Maybe I will put a plant in it, only cost a quarter, haha.

 

But if you need to repot the plant you will have to break it. Of course it is already broken....

 

You are right! Did not think ahead to that. Maybe just put it on the shelf or stick some dried flowers into it.
