Another acquisition. I think it's an umbrella stand, or maybe a stick stand. Looks like kutani. I really like the decoration around the top rim. It has very elaborate decoration on the front of a bird and trees, which has invited some punishment over the years. I guess they were sitting ducks with umbrellas being thrust at them. 27cm tall.

Satsuma rather than Kutani, although it is using the Kutani colours so easy to mix up.

Ah yes, of course. It is earthenware. Kutani is much lighter ceramic yes? I was swayed by the decoration and the flora and fauna aspect. I am also used to seeing satsuma with the seal marks on them and human themes immortals etc.

    Toothpick holder then? 8op

I thought it was a vase at first but nothing came up in searches. I have known umbrella stands to be much taller too so thought maybe a stick stand. Im not really sure and hope someone can enlighten me.

They are a fine pair of vases. I thought that they were quite large until I saw the photo with the apple it. :woot::rolleyes:

The detail and quality is excellent, a lot better than mine but I wouldn't pay that much. I'm sure you could pick up a similar pair for less than 5k and enough change for a bottle of moet.

Oops sorry. Looking at the wrong item. Fat sausage fingers.
Yes they are very grand indeed. Still wouldn't pay that much though.

I got this valuation back from an auctioneer. Although they cant shed much light on it.

"This is quite unusual, probably once one of a pair. It is glazed earthenware and made in Satsuma, I don't suppose you have seen a signature on it anywhere?

We would be thing of an estimate somewhere in the £1,000-1,500 region (subject to inspection). Please let me know if you wish to go ahead with a sale.

    Best wishes"

I do like it but perhaps not that much. I love the geometric shapes around the edge of the rim. Maybe if it did fetch a few quid I could buy a nice satsuma piece for less with a similar pattern.

I took this to be valued at Bonhams today. They have lowered the estimate to £800 to £1200, given the damage to the branches, flowers and bird, although I suspected this would happen. It's going into the oriental auction in either May or Ocober. Apparently their Japanese expert has never seen anything like it. Definitely no signature on it so exact origin remains unknown.

I've just been to Chorlton again to try and find the other vase. I think I should give up! The auction is online so I will post a link if that is possible.. I've never done one before other than Ebay.

Thank you. If it flops I have to pay the photograph fee every time they relist and wait another 6 months. So fingers crossed.
