Made of Natural Stone. May represent Phallic Symbolism. The Patina appears to have occurred naturally. Piece shows signs of normal use especially on the working end. No information as to its provenance. Shows similarities to a Pestle that was appraised on PBS Antiques Road Show some years ago. One of the images is a photograph from the PBS appraisal with my Pestle below. Link and photographs attached.

The plough marks (chips) make me beleive it's authentic.Although the chips seem to have a pretty deep patina also,so that breakage could be quite old.I can't tell from your very dark pics what exactly is represented on the pestle's top/cap.
Can You repost lighter Pics ?
PS-Maybe @Aquitaine can lighten them up & clarify them for us ?

    Thanks ,those are better !
Try searching-Northwest Coast Nipple Top Maul/Columbia River Nipple Top Pestle.
Do you know the pieces history:Where originally found, bought, rumors ?
Any info that could help nail down Tribal Affiliation helps pinpoint the history & value of the piece.
PS-Re value of the Antique Roadshow piece vs yours.Yours could be 'Pre-Contact',but the Roadshow piece has the effigy Raven/Vulture/Eagle head and's pristine, that said,if yours is authentic it's still a very collectible piece.
    PSS-Is it hard,like a black basalt ?

  5. Thanks. I do have some more info on this Maul/Pestle and will post soon. I also have a Carved Stone Bird that may be considered "Tribal Art" and will post photographs for feedback.

Ditto Komo.Re-Roadshow,for a pestle to be worth 10-20K it's got to be one hellaciously superb piece.

  8. I found this pestle/Maul at a Flea Market years ago. I've showed it to a diverse range of "experts" and virtually all of them thought it was a very old and original authentic piece. I sent photographs to an Auction House and they thought it may very well be Northwest Coast and estimated its auction value at $300-$500 and that they's be happy to include it in one of their auctions. For what it's worth, several years ago I contacted Anthony Slater-Ralph from the PBS Antiques Roadshow (link above) who did the PBS appraisal and he replied rather quickly. I searched my emails for his reply with no success so I can't quote him exactly, however it was his opinion that the Pestle was probably an authentic piece but some knucklehead (paraphrasing) had Carved/Scratched the markings in the Tip of the Pestle.

PC-Don't know as much abt PNW stone mauls as Slater Ralph, but the patina in the X Motif seem identical to the rest of the surface .Maybe gently rub those incisions w/a wet toothbrush/Q-Tip (plain water) & see if any pigment rinses off.
PS-Keep looking at genuine pics of similar pestles & see if one has carving close.Def get a hands-on opinion frm a reputable College Archaeology Department or 2.
    Best of luck.
