Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

If it's the Ephemera Society of America, I don't think a basic membership is pricey at all! $70 annually. Of course, there are more expensive tiers of membership, but joining those is a choice, if one wants the benefits that come with those levels.

The membership fee to the American Library Association used to cost me much much more than that. But that is a professional organization. And now in retirement I have free membership.

Let's see... I currently belong to the Daguerreian Society, which for me is mostly a collector organization. Their membership fee is now $100 annually. Worth every penny, too!

Figtree-Would love to see a few of your favorite Daguerreotypes if you're so inclined.

I am a bad photographer of daguerreotypes, although I do have some. I've always preferred ambrotypes. (I know, weird...) Also, most of my collection consists of photos on paper.

Anyway, the Daguerreian Society focuses on any 19th century photography and images, especially from before about 1870. This is one of my terrible early photos of a dag in my collection. I took this with a digital camera in 2014.

This next one is also in my collection. I had the glass cleaned by a professional, and they sent me this image, which is much better than the one I took above. I believe these have both been shared on this site before, because they had been resized on my old computer.

Those are beautiful Fig.Dags are hard to photograph because they have a mirror-like surface (when pristine).
I had a hand-colored 1/4 plate dag of a Mason in full regalia I gave to my girlfriend in 1969 as a 'love token',should've saved it for my true soulmate, alas !

I haven't decided yet, @Bookahtoo . I would like to... I love Boston, but am taking a couple of fairly pricey plane trips before then. Will think about it, and am leaning toward doing it. I have been to the Daguerreian Society symposia in Kansas City in 2019 and in Chicago in 2022. (The ones for 2020 and 2021 were online, and I also attended those.) These are really fun, and now that I'm getting to know some of the people, they are even more interesting. I joined the society in about 2014 or 2015 but was still working full time and really couldn't make room for that sort of pleasure trip.

The Society does have a Facebook group, by the way. And it's open to anybody to join. You don't have to be a member of the org.

I never have gotten the hang of Facebook groups. I've joined a few, but there doesn't seem to be an area just to chat.

Well I just googled it, and apparently you can create chats, so maybe I haven't been looking hard enough.

Mostly in the Dag Society group there are people showing their collections, or discussing topics related to photography of that era. I'm not sure what you mean by chats.... there is a way to send messages to individuals through Facebook Messenger, of course.
