    Hi,

I am very depressed because I didnt win an online auction to adopt this beautiful 925 dragon fly brooch. I can see there is a mark/name on the back but I cant quite read it. Would any of you might recognize the mark or be familiar with this work so I can continue my hunt for it?

Also if its possible to tell the approximate age from the clasp mechanism that would be wonderful to learn.

    Much appreciated.

Welcome, Capitulation (and your kitty friend!) So sorry that you did not win this pin.

Are there any letters you can make out? Anything besides letters that might be a maker's mark? Are these the only pictures the seller posted?

Hi, thanks for your interest. There was one more picture, which Ive posted below. The top picture that shows the underside with the pin does show a name on the "tail" of the dragonfly in the center. If you zoom in you can see it but I cant make it out...would love to know the maker. Theres also another mark that looks oval above that but that one is completely illegible.

It kind of reminds me of a Jezlaine scotty dog a bit but I dont think that is the maker from what I can make out from the name...

I had already tried zooming, but like you, cannot make out a name that means anything to me. I take it the seller did not say anything about the markings or place of origin?

No it was on Goodwill online auctions. They dont really identify much. Their auction site is also really dumb because they make you enter your 'max bid' at the outset and you cant really respond if someone else outbids you. consequently they're cannibilizing their own sales.

I thought the maker said 'DILRUND' or something of the like. Oh well..thanks for trying..

I see "BIER??ND," but can't find anything useful with that interpretation.

Thanks. I think the end is more likely 'LIND'..like you said, and I was also guessing a 'B' at the beginning. Oh well...thank you for trying!

That type of clasp suggests an origin during the reign of George V (1910 - 1936) deco days.

If you search, you will find the question What is terlin silver? has been asked many times in various Internet forums.

    Hi and welcome, Capitulation.
I am sorry your pretty dragonfly flew away, that auction system sounds a bit dictatorial.:(
I read Dierland, which is a name of German origin, but the brooch was probably made in North America. I also see a smaller oval with 925 in it, for sterling.
I agree with Bronwen on early 20th century for the clasp.

The age means it is more difficult to find another. But not impossible. Sometimes you have to wait some time, and then when you have almost forgotten about it, it comes your way.:)

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Looks like STERLING to me, too.

I read 'STERLING' too. It's fairly recent, sometime in the last 20-30 years, either Jezlaine or produced by the one of the Thai manufacturers that supplied them...

Thank you for all your thoughtful responses. After I initially posted I sheepishly started wondering if the LIND was actually LING as in STERLING. I did read up on 'terlin' silver..thank you for that. In my gut I felt this piece had some good age to it, but it is remarkable how much the earrings on etsy look similar. At any rate I sincerely appreciate all the comments and will keep looking. I went for a long hike yesterday and saw dozens of the real dragonflies so that will keep me going for a while!

If @say_it_slowly hadn't said something, I'd still be trying to work out the "name." :p
