[IMG]Hi forum. This is what I believe is a dagger cane from what I have seen online.
What does one look for to identify the age, value, military ect... I thought the buttons on the leather[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG] handle might be of help. Thanks in advance .
    Wek.

I have no particular expertise in this area, but IMO the item is not anything that would be used by a military service. It is a bit on the crude side so I'd say probably a one-off. 20th C. Sometime. I don't think the pattern on the brass snap or button will help ID it. Be careful as what you have may be illegal in various places regardless of its age.

Wek, you come up with the most interesting items! Because of the leather woven handle, my first thought was a Basque malika, walking stick, with hidden weapon. Malikas are noted for their leather woven handles though some handles are metal. After doing a little research found that malikas have spears rather than a daggers like yours. Also malikas seem to have a flattened horn or hardwood pommel knob in the same shape of the berets Basgue shepherd wear. The wood of your shaft appears to be bamboo while malika shafts are not. Here are a couple examples of Basque malikas:

Somewhere I read that the finest sword canes are of Malacca. Speaking of swords, do check out the length of the inside of the cane, like sticking a wire down inside it. If it is longer than the dagger blade, then a good possibility the dagger is a remnant of a sword. It was not unusual for the long blade of hidden swords broke and then reshaped making it appear as a dagger cane.

Did work on improving pic of the button on the handle. After cropping, zooming and editing it still doesn't look military or special. Have included a pic.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

I have a whip....bought at a touristy shop selling India & eastern what nots.
Very similar woven handle with a screw out spike similar to yours.

Yours looks older than mine...or at least more used......
The last time mine was used it was by my ex SIL ....the batshit crazy one....whom , upon my return home from work was whipping the whip.....around my living room.....to the horror of all present !!

Thanks so much Susan.i looked through the sites you provided . I have yet to find anything similar. The cane is the length of the dagger and no longer.
I think it is a very old and nice cane. Not a souvenir peice.. The leather grip is very nice. I will just keep looking.
    Thanks again
