Thanks Brad for your thoughts, and I agree. It was just my lack of experience dealing in fine antique silver that raised an eyebrow when this dealer failed to mention anything about weight.

One of the quotes that has stood out in my mind was AF's thoughts regarding these armorial pieces: "The elaboration of the engraving might give an idea of how close these items came to the top table but in themselves such items do not automatically indicate personal use or special regard by the holder of the arms".

Given the elaborate and fine attention to detail of these engraved arms, one wonders just how close these might have come to the top table and/or personal use ???

    SILVER BEAKERS 003-001.JPG

I guess I would never know given the provenance -- or lack thereof. But I "assume" one experienced in this field (silver) could tell just by looking at the style, form, maker, date, quality, engraving and construction ??? Just as one experienced in fine art or ceramics could tell if a painting is by the hand of a master artist, or if a vase is a piece of imperial palace household ware.

My neighbour's horses. Standing at the fence with my camera zoomed all the way, I was unable to capture a good close-up. The grounds are huge!

Meant to put this in the finds thread when I bought it a couple of weeks ago, but I forgot. Got it for a couple of bucks; it sold in four hours for $90. Loved the rhinestone balls and ringed pearls.

    Hey! Don't be jealous. :)

He does have a nice spot and some beautiful horses.

This small lot is hot of the press at a total cost of $102. We haven't even wiped the dust off of anything or done any detailed research. Quick Google searches...

1959 Gricevics poster. A similar one is held in this collection: http://collections.museumca.org/?q=collection-item/201054556

Chinese Republic Period famille noire mille fleur cong form vase, and a 19th C. small silk embroidered pillow.

A pair of circa 1810-20 Chamberlain's Worcester armorial porcelain plates.

1888 first edition Walt Whitman book.

And the last item...........a small vintage leather case with something inside.......I'm afraid I cannot reveal what it is here, sorry! I purchased a similar one for $10 - $20 a year or so ago, placed it on eBay and was bombarded within the first hour from buyers requesting offers of a BIN price. After around the second hour or so, eBay pulled the listing. :( I was able to re-sell it any way to a collector in FL. for a couple thousand dollars. :D

    Great finds!!!!

I was in a few antique malls. I found the above piece for just $12. Missing a few stones, somebody tired to clean it and messed up the goldtone finish a little, but still magnificent to me.

Then I was in another mall and they had the necklaces hanging from a chandelier. I could barely reach this, but it was worth the work for $10. Art Deco pot metal necklace, findings probably replaced:

    Pot Metal Sapphires (480x420).jpg

I recently attended a Lia Sophia party and was floored by how much the jewelry cost.
First and last party for me.

I know the antique malls in our area are hurting, and some dealers are getting pushy. The one mall I went into today the owner physically grabs me and says "I want to show you some jewelry. I have a great deal for you." So he starts gathering up made in China plastic beads and bangle bracelets and I politely say "No thank you, that's not what I am looking for." I did find a rosary I wanted, no price tag, and I took it to the front register. He starts YELLING at me "You didn't want to buy my jewelry! You did me a favor! I found two pieces of 14k gold in the pile I wanted to sell you, but NO, you didn't want to look!" I just stared at him, saying nothing. There were customers gathered around the register watching. He said "There's more jewelry right here, look at it!" I said I couldn't find what he was talking about, and I thought he was going to jump over the counter and hit me. I asked calmly "How much is the rosary?" and he yelled "a dollar!!!" I gave him a dollar and left. I know he didn't have any 14k gold, and if he did, he should have been ecstatic, not angry. I don't think he can make his rent- people are always moving their booths out.

Terry, those 14k earring backs are worth more than $2. Here the jewelers wanted $35 for a pair, and check the prices on ebay! I always peruse costume earring with a loupe to find them! It also works in reverse- I have found 14k earrings with Avon backs somebody stuck on there that were overlooked! Thanks for having me, I missed you all!

    Thanks, Sharona!

I may not be the oldest, smartest or most experienced picker here or out there in the field, but I darn sure try my best each time out.

Out of that lot above, I like the poster the most. I sent images to one of the best auction houses in the country when it comes to vintage posters and they got back to me today. Their only concern was the size regarding it being original or repro, as my piece is nearly double the size of the one housed in that museum's collection. But, they said; "it may not have been common enough to reproduce in large quantities - otherwise we might be seeing more results" --- meaning, it's probably original. It was "tricky" (their word) to place a value on it as they were only able to find one other example --- the example within that link.

It looks like 'Tricia Nixon' (President Richard Nixon's eldest daughter) wanted or got 12 of those Chamberlain's Worcester armorial porcelain plates for a wedding gift back in 1971 according to this 1971 newspaper article's quote: "Tricia also suggested (in case nobody gets her the silver, crystal or china) she would like Royal Worcester ovenware with strawberries, and a set of 12 antique Royal Worcester service plates valued at $250. The 160-year-old plates are white with gold scalloped edges and, at the top, a blue Medieval crest — Universa Benevolentia (benevolent universe)".

Sharonna, love the little family pin- do I see sterling in there?

Well, I saw a ring Friday in a friend's antique mall. I wasn't sure what the metal content was or what the stone was. I asked the person at the register to have my friend contact me, and I wrote down my name and phone number and my questions . Of course she didn't give him the note. I stopped in Saturday and my friend said it was at least 14k, probably 18k, and it was a moonstone. My limited testing skills indicate 18K (with so much wear to the sides, that was my guess.) The reason I was confused about the stone was because it is a rarer cat's eye moonstone. My friend gave me a great deal on it.

Hi Marko it is by far fetched 925 and the bracelets and rings are silver, not sure about the camphor yet. The sweetheart bracelet is sterling or at least marked as so

I saw your ring earlier, beautiful!
    Perdy bowl digger!
