And scripophilists out on the wings.

Your 50s Canadian voyageurs will be worth their silver value anyway. By all means post some details, a new thread is a good idea.

I think most collectors of anything think all collectors of anything else at at best, misguided, at worst, stark raving mad.

I am immune to criticism as I do not collect stuff, I just let it hang around, which is different.

Apparently, I married a guy who is not as keen on letting stuff hang around as I am, LOL. But, will start a thread on the various coins, etc, some time hence. Too busy with RL carp these days...

Stark raving about covers it. The dog lovers are barking instead, naturally.

Af, are you asking me about the shilling? If so let me know and once I dig it out, I'll post elsewhere since it's being kept....tell me where to post.....

You could post it on Cointalk, or here. The reason I suspect it, is that replicas have been made for over a century and it could well be dug up but still be a fake. Since these fetch quite a lot of money if real, you could try sending it to one of the grading companies for authentication. The cost of this would be modest compared with the increase in value if deemed genuine.

OK af, I'm back and "dug"out my coin....am not into collecting such, but since my Mom found it, it's a keeper, real or not, but I believe she had it authenticated....it was in a case, but I found no other documentation....so have at it and YOU can let me know ifyou would be so kind....am also going to post another tiny gold looking coin she had that I have NO CLUE as to what it is....does anyone else???? And when I say "less than "-"mm I mean "slightly" less than, just for clarification......I suppose the 'shilling' could also be considered approx 7/8"....since it's out of round. Thanks all for any and all input !! Sue Shilling.jpg TINYcoin.jpg Shilling.jpg TINYcoin.jpg

    Both appear to be cast

The real ones were die struck

Get the Shilling checked. There must be a coin shop near by. Once they give it a yay/nay go from there.
A coin grading service, such as PCGS would be my next step.
These ARE reproed by the buckets full, mostly poor castings, but some pretty da***d good ones too. If it was dug from the ground in the fifties it DOES give it a certain amount of credence though.
I can't tell if it's cast from the photo. Is there a ridge around the edge? A CLEAR on edge photo would help.
If it's real, considering condition, probably worth around $5000 or more.

Well for a coin so thin, getting a good picture was hard with what I had to work with, either my li'l ole Canon digital (pics 4 & 5)or the Digital microscope (the close-ups), but here's what I came up with. No matter the worth, it's still a keeper, but having an idea of the value is nice to know. Where my Mom found it, was a broken piece of pottery along with other old coins- 1700s & 1800s, but none like this one....the place also was settled in the 1600's, so I'm adding that to the provenance (in my mind!). More important though,is just knowing for sure if it's authentic as we've thought for so long!!! Thanks again for your help!!!!

    GOOD LUCK!

As a metal detecting enthusiast this is high on my bucket list of "wanna finds" but I don't think too many were lost here in New Jersey. I DO have a Nova Cesaria colonial NJ minted coin though (1786). Checked that off the bucket list about a year or so ago.

The photos, to me are inconclusive. There are indications it could be cast but these may be anomalies of the crude manufacturing methods of the time.

Hands on pro evaluation is necessary with anything of this potential.
