    Hi Everyone,

I stumbled across your forum whilst investigating a small still life work I purchased here in Ireland. About myself, I work in business but my passion is antiques something I inherited from my Grandfather who was an avid collector especially in Irish silver, Persian rugs, French furniture and art. I have an interest in silver, Chinese porcelain and Antique rugs specifically tribal rugs. Whilst technology has given us instant access to a vast amount of data online, it has also made it more difficult for the hobbyist collector to find items of interest as every dealer out there is "in like Flynn" when a good piece comes online. I've taken to dealing with small antique shops who specialise in house clearances and sometimes you will be the first to appraise an object that could have been sitting in some estate house for a number of centuries. Ireland has many hidden estates that were built from the early 1700s by senior military personnel and dignitaries many of whom had spent time in Indochina and although against the rules brought back gifts and plunder as reward for their service abroad. So it is not beyond possibility that one could be lucky enough one day to find a very rare piece and enjoy all that learning and knowledge along the way. G

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Welcome, again. What a fascinating idea... wandering the countryside looking for old, old, stuff. In the American Southwest, one can have a similar experience when trekking the desert and looking for ancient Clovis points and such. Local museums used to chide people for taking artifacts from their archeologically-appropriate site, in hopes of future professional inspections, but... the desert and scrub prairies are so vast, and people are so unable to leave a piece of beautiful flint in the dust... the museums usually just beg that you bring the piece to them and tell where you found it, and they'll add it (plus finder's name, if you like) and add it to their exhibits. Glad to have you here!

    Hi Gerry,
Welcome to the friendliest group around. Last time I was in Ireland I went to a boot sale outside Cork. I bought a tiny metal (I thought was a charm) barrel shaped thing for under a pound. Back here in the states a few years later it sold for 300 dollars. It was a solid silver fancy from the 17th Cent.

I thought it foolish that you were to leave something where it was found. Probably never seen again anyway.
If you are near an area being studied sure but on millions of acres??? :p
