I ship fragile things this way>
Wrap item well in foam/bubble wrap.
Use a box at least 3" larger than the item, all around, and place it snugly in that with foam pellets and seal it up.
Put this box in another box with at least 3" all around.
    Ship it.
If you don't pack it this way.....save yourself the time and shipping cost and pitch it out the window into the metal trash can.

I have shipped neon from San Diego to Germany without breakage.

    Hi KOT,
To tell you the truth I hate opening a box and have all that foam pellets fly everywhere. I always packed the foam pellets loosely in plastic bags from the super markets and made sure they did not fly everywhere. I always double boxed also. The box I was sending would fit into a larger box. I used 20oz plastic water bottles to fit in the corners, top and bottom. They weight nothing so the only extra weight was the second box which added not much to the weight. The really valuable pieces I used spray foam insulation. Sprayed the foam half up the box wrapped the item in plastic film laid in the box waited a few minutes until it dried, turned the item over and sprayed the rest. When it dried I took the plastic wrap off and wrapped in white tissue paper and re inserted it. Taped the box closed and off it went.

I thought some of Vallerysthal was still bringing a decent price depending on color and piece, but I could be wrong. The blue seems to be quite popular and sold often in some shops on Etsy.

I understand about the pellets though this is a basic way to do it, most importantly double boxing with lots of room.
I've done the bagged pellets thing, bubble-pack, 'pillow' bags, Styrofoam, whatever I have and appropriate. I LOVE the bottle idea too! :)

When I open such a box I keep all the flaps up, remove the item slowly by tipping it, and only a couple will escape. Same with the inner box and with such an item I open it on the couch or bed so if it was to slip and fall... Then I close the boxes up and save it all for re-use. :)

Thanks, Skeezik. You confirmed it again. It was just a few years ago that I was told that. Having grown up with what I believe was all Northwood I never considered that items such as a Jeannette poodle powder jar was carnival. To me that was just “iridized” glass. And I thought that type flaked off. “Real carnival” would never do that. I appreciate your reinforcement of “carnival” and also a new one for me. Stretch glass is iridized, pressed with no pattern!!!!!!!! I’ll store that away for another time. Thanks for that, too.

No, Greg. No problem at all. Though I actually did think they were dogwood blossoms because of the “flat” end of the petals. Learned something else, dogwood is FOUR petals. I’ll try to remember. :singing: What are the five petal ones? Yes. Authors have created new and often incorrect names that are passed down and become fact. But most often common usage prevails. We can now end a sentence with a preposition without bringing home a report card with a D on it. AND BTW, Sophia never mentioned to me that she had anything to do with glass or pottery. But I always favored Audrey Hepburn.

Pearl. Some of the Vallerysthal pieces I have will not bring 10% of what I paid. Most people don’t know that they are still in business. Just clear glass though, no opaque. At least last time I checked.

Re: shipping glass. This is not bragging. I’ll shoot it down in the next paragraph. The boxes I use for all glass less than 12” are USPS Priority # 7 - 12x12x8. Liquor stores supply the liners from gallon wine boxes. They are 12 inches. The glass piece is wrapped in bubble wrap. The wine liner is wrapped around it and taped. The ends are stuffed with newspaper and the wrapped piece is scrunched into the USPS box. The empty space used to be filled with peanuts, but now is stuffed with plastic bags filled with newspapers or anything else light. The idea is to keep the glass from in any way moving or touching the sides. Often two or three pieces will fit in one box. If not I will fit two USPS boxes together for a 12x12x16. Not once, out of maybe 500 shipments has a piece even been cracked.

NOW, - have any of you dealt with Vikram Bacchawat in India? Glen Thistlewood introduced me to him as a very well-known, highly respected. International glass dealer. I COULD NOT BELIEVE his second SHIPMENT to me Via UPS.

A box about 12x12x12. I was wondering where the second or third box was for all the items I bought. The entire box was sealed with what I would call a burlap wrapping. Had to be cut off. Open the top and inside are “compartments.” Top, bottom and four sides of each are ¼ inch pieces of Styrofoam. The glass piece is placed inside that rectangular section. Other sections of various width, depth are the same. All separated by ONLY ¼ inch Styrofoam. No individual wrapping! Nothing except the little compartments. I’m guessing the trick was the very tight fit. Nothing could move more than, maybe 1/16th of an inch. Probably not even that much. I was amazed that is how he ships. Didn’t dare ask if anything was ever broken. Most likely not.

WARNING. Don’t try that at home.:shy::confused::oops: I don’t have the courage to even think about it.
