Ever since I was very little, the first time I heard “The Diary” by Neil Sedaka from my parent’s record collection, his music resonated with me. From my collection; The 1960 45 rpm first pressing of Calandar Girl with the original picture sleeve. And the 1961 LP first pressing with many of Neil’s early hits on it, both are in amazing condition.
Have I got a story for you! My high school Latin teacher was a relatively young guy (definitely under 30, but could have been even younger in the early 60's) and he liked to act more our age than his. So in 4th year he decided to give out an "award" every month to the outstanding student in the class. And to accompany the award (Femina Menses - Woman of the Month) he played Calendar Girl on a portable record player!
I love that story, I think it’s kinda sweet in a way. I can see it all playing out in my mind right now. I had a few cool teachers, but not that cool.
He was definitely different! And he stuck around too. He always took his car to my brother's shop. He stayed in town until retirement.
