Any chance of identifying this girl?

This is a Witzel studio photograph from the early 1900s. It has his mark, but doesn't identify the girl. From what I've read, Witzel was a popular photographer of celebrities in and around Hollywood.

It's not Shirley Temple since Witzel died less than a year before she was born.

It's possible she's just a child, but so many of Witzel's photographs were of people in movies that she could be a child star. She does seem awfully young for that to be the case, though.

I found this photo with others my mother had, and the others are of adult women actresses.

I've searched Google images and even uploaded this photo to their image search, but haven't found another copy of this photo. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help identify her?

You may be right, Bakers. I just wonder at her being topless. Wouldn't that be unusual if it were just a photo a parent was having done?

Since she is topless, I'm thinking it's likely to be from the '20s. Even in the teens, I'd think Victorian and Edwardian modesty would have said this wasn't acceptable. Or was child nudity not viewed the same way?

How old does the girl in my photo look? I was thinking 2 or 3? Trying to figure out if that fits with Virginia Davis' age and story.

If her hair was blonde Id have thought Shirley temple. But obviously not,date wise.

His brother ran a studio under Witzel until 1952. How do we know its NOT Shirley ?

 

They look very similar, but I see differences in their features. It looks to me like Shirley's chin was pointier and her cheekbones were different.

 

I'm not sure it's a child star. It may have been the child of an actor or director. It reminds me of an advertisement photo that I've seen.

 

At that age, how can you be sure it's a girl?

 

Good question... I just get the feeling the child is a girl, but I suppose it's possible it's boy.
