hi I found this in my loft and I wondered what it is and if it is antique... I assume it's English but no idea of Age, location, maker. I have no idea where to start... I have had a look around it and all I can't seem to find is numbers.

It is not antique and really doesn't fit any of the historical designs for furniture. Bears a bit of resemblance to British Colonial furniture but, being oak, I doubt it is. Consequently, I would guess this is 1950s or later used furniture, though it seems to be well made.

Id think more 20s-30s on the age ,it looks vaguely mission/deco to me. Quite a lovely and useful little thing. :)

That may be the forest where the wood came from......

We'd call it a sideboard. Could be 1930s, there was a bit of a sort of Victorian Gothic revival here then. I wonder if it's Olde Charm.

Thanks for the replys... I brought a table from a dealer and he wanted to buy it from me and offered £1,000 but was not willing to share any info on it... Made me think it is more than likely worth more than this if he was offering that.

It is a great solid piece and was interested in more detail around it.

It's a decent piece, but I honestly can't see what he was offering that much for. The only caveat is that perhaps he was convinced it was by a particular maker. It certainly isn't Dresser. Have a look at Voysey designs - and there was a maker in the Cotswolds whose name has escaped me.

Have you looked carefully to see if it has a mouse anywhere?

Oh, and can you get some photos of the carcass and the drawer insides and base please?

If he's a dealer.....then of course he thinks it's worth more to him, but that's his business, why would he offer you full retail,
Don't think less of him for that.....

Hm. Try Stickley as well. Still wondering if it has a mouse.

Yes I was also surprised at the offer.. I am from Oxford uk what is only around 15 miles from Cotswolds so that could be somthing.

I have not looked for a mouse is this carved? The top has a recess in it like it held a large mirror at some point.

Yup, carved. A photo of the recess would be very useful too. And a better full front view, plus the top sans clutter if you can. ;)

Here are some more photos... The closer I look at it the less I am convinced of this being worth much... The guy who offered the money did not even look inside it he just glanced at it and said if I wanted to get rid of it he would give me £1000 for

It's lovely quality. Solid light oak, hand pegging inside too. Now I've seen your close ups, it looks English Arts and Crafts to me. I think the recess does suggest a mirror. Can you get me a shot of the hinges at all? I'm seriously wondering if it's a Voysey design.

It's not that old. It has machine mitred dove tails. Take the money and RUN!!!!

Machine mitring was used here in the 19th C on good quality furniture. Come to that, it's used on Art Deco and MCM stuff that sells for a LOT of money. I'm not saying it is for definite, but if the thing is by a sought after designer - not maker, designer - then a thousand is cheap. The chalked number is probably an order number.

I don't think the mitres are machined as they are all very slightly different if they were machined would they not be the same? I was going to mention that the numbers were chalk.... I will get a pic of the hinge but what are you looking for on them as they just appear to be a hinge... The door stays appear to have a mark on them on the inside can't make out what it is though
