Featured old pot and pestle help

these were an interesting couple i found in the same shop, lady said they came together
paid 2 pound each for them

i think the pot might be pretty old, inside looks pretty convincing, think dug up. small 3 inches, round bottom

not sure about what i presume is a pestle (4 inches)

any ideas where they might have come from ?

any thoughts or info appreciated

 

Are they both made from some kind of stone?

 

Pestle, if that, looks more porous than the pot.........maybe small for a pestle???? or maybe they came in many sizes.....

If the pot is stone,that's a whole different ballgame-as in ancient w/ a capital 'A'. I've had a small Mayan head for years,still can't figure if it's stone or almost petrified plaster/ceramic-very hard.
Might be worth having it tested at a local college ?

Heavy for its size even though hollow
cold and hard as stone

But doesn't sound like stone when tapped, don't know if that's got anything to do with it being hollow

 

WAG regarding the tiny little pot. It's obviously made canteen style to be hung on a string or twine. I'm guessing it was to hold little bits of dried herbs or medicine and worn around the neck. Must have had some kind of stopper originally.

Pierced lug handles and ointment pot / vessel are some good keywords that I found while poking around the internet. EDIT: should have added keywords "ointment jar", also.

The pestle looks similar to those made in Mexico of basalt - called a "tejolote", used with the mortar - "molcajete".

no unfortunately not, hit a road block with it
the PAS dont accept enquiries about items after looking
i tried looking for other forums for this type of thing, but in vain
its something i wont attempt to sell untill i know what it really is

not in a rush either as its pretty cool !

It might be helpful to find a geologist to take a look at both objects, to see if they could identify the stone. That would be a good clue to origin.

Nice! Yes, it looks like the one on the right, same shape and colour and 'joyful' position of the handles.
And the pyxis is more rare than the juglet (and cuter).
