    Greetings,

Would anyone be able to tell me about this style of chair?

A woman my family knew was leaving the states and gifted it to my father when he expressed an interest in restoring it. She told my father it was passed down to her by her Aunt who worked in the Tokyo Trials. That’s all we know about it. It’s collapsable.

I got the sense this chair may have been modified during it’s life. Any input would be appreciated!

Late 19th century. Looks to be walnut. Some elements of stick and ball.

It doesn’t have a stamp, there is however a bunch of numbers scratched into the bottom. It also looks like at one point it had leather in certain parts. It’s covered in old holes along the edges too. Either from bugs or nails. 4366EFEC-B3D0-4182-A51D-900E708CDFD9.jpeg 99C048FF-8246-4F39-BE91-D705C2240B83.jpeg

And here is the piece which is flaking off. I think it’s leather? 389BB941-DD08-4621-9C89-CCF6637BCD79.jpeg

That is an applied burl wood veneer. With the incised details, the demi-lune trim and the finial gallery, I'd call it Eastlake style. It has been reupholstered at least three times, judging from the nail patterns underneath.

Looks a little similar to the folding one I posted some time ago with President Garfield’s image woven in to it.....at least same vintage......only mine also had a black mourning ribbon on it.......

You are spectacular and your chair is bad-ass, by the way.
