    Not only that, but the bird in the painting has a lighter shade head to body, and this one has the shading the other way around. Maybe there are individual or regional differences?

    Yeah, I'm not convinced it's the right bird, but it was the closest I found in my presupposed-to-be-right-but-not-proven geographic area.

    So not a scientific method of bird searching.

    But I'm okay with that because I started reflecting on wow what a lot of rabbit holes and the OP seems to have gone missing, maybe I should stop. :joyful:

    When I first saw the bird I thought Cormorant but dismissed the idea because it was obviously the prey not the hunter but as I was revisiting the thread today I had to make the search anyway.

    This one looks pretty close:
