Featured Ceramic Vase - What Did I Buy?

Once in a while I do buy something other than a cameo, although I usually try not to buy anything that is going to take much more of my very limited space. However, loved this right off, so did what I do when I hanker after something I really shouldn't: put in the minimum bid with enough time left on the auction for someone who wants it more to have plenty of opportunity to outbid me. No one wanted it more.

Have only just won it, these are listing photos. Seller says it was given to them over 20 years ago. Height is 49 cm. Did I buy something nice? I like it even if it is a cheap knockoff of something nice.

Not a cameo! Horrors! :D:D:D:D Actually, a very delightful vase. Great colors and shape. I will watch this post with interest to see what you found. Is that writing on the rim on the bottom?

The word 'cameo' was in the title. Doesn't make that much sense in describing the vase, so obviously just a lure to hook me. I'm not seeing writing other than the large numbers on the bottom; doesn't mean nothing is there. At what o'clock do you think you see something?

    Brush Mccoy Amaryllis Majolica possibly.

Good lead; it's turning up a few things that are very similar, although so far not this shape. If they got the $195 asked for this one, think I did OK for $25.

    So similar, & yet...

I have a handful of pieces of Brush-McCoy Corn Ware, 1 inherited, others acquired to keep it company. When I was looking for companion pieces, I saw that a competing line had dark interiors, the way my new vase does. Not Shawnee...who?

Yep, that is the right shape. One with the set is an 8 inch bud vase. Wonder whether seller of mine, who is in Ohio, is right in giving dimensions as 19 x 49 cm. Twenty inches is pretty darn tall. Would the numbers on the bottom be both a shape number & a glaze color combo number? The bud vase is # 090. Here's the photo with the numbers other way round:

Do you think 1920s would also be right period of production for this one?

Having now seen a few other shapes & color combos, I'm more than ever pleased with mine. Thanks all! :)

It's the same line, but a different shape number. There were many shapes in this Majolica line, and the same shapes were also used in other lines with different glaze treatments. The size will be interesting, because I think the listing must have had a typo. I couldn't find yours in the books I have, maybe because of the tiny print! The ads for the Amaryllis Majolica in Sanfords say 1926 and 1927. In Dec. 1925, the pottery name changed from Brush-McCoy to just Brush, but people will use the old name.

I would say you bought something nice. $25 is a fair price. It's not a rare vase which is why no one bid against you. Amaryllis was part of two lines: Majolica and Kolorkraft. You have one of the Majolica line examples. Anything over 10" would be very unusual.

It looked like the same shape as Bronwen's to me. My picture makes the top looked angled, it is not.

The KolorKraft shapes are different, at least what I see in this book.

That's correct, Judy. I should have been clearer. It wouldn't surprise me, though, if a given shape was done in both glazes.

That is the vase that is part of the set at the link kronos posted. The overall shape is a match for mine, but neither number on mine is 090. USPS took possession of it this morning. When it arrives we will learn how tall it really is & whether the colors look so much brighter only because photos were taken in sunlight. Occurred to me maybe seller meant mm instead of cm, but then it would be less than 2 inches tall, which is clearly not correct either. If it really is 49 cm tall, then what do I have? (Besides something for the cats to knock over?)

This one is supposed to be Kolorkraft & is more vivid:

While this is more muted: [IMG]

The 'cabinet vase' shape is the one I'm seeming most:

You really could collect just amaryllis variants.
