    hi folks

found a few interesting bits and bobs yesterday at the charity shops

this was only a couple of quid

probably touristy but, think it might have at least some age

the paint work looks to have honest aging i think

    would it be thai ?

    has two slits for eyes

    any thoughts or info appreciated

You're probably right.....my only thought was it can be seen through (eye slits) and breathed through (nose holes)..........so if REAL, then child size.....but probably deco then.

Indonesian rather than Thai. But Any will be able to give you more details.

Yes, Indonesian, it is from Java. I think it is a she, an aristocratic lady.
I also think the aging is natural, and she could have been used.

Javanese masks without holes in the sides are usually from Malang, East Java (birthplace of the love of my life). There would only be one actor/dancer who played all the roles, so he would switch masks and hold them in one hand in front of his face. That also causes for extra wear on the front of the mask.

I respect a mask that has been hollowed out and smoothed nicely ....so it is indeed wearable...
the discolouration at the bottom.....likely from heavy breath..

The actors have speaking roles, so that accounts for discolouration as well.
