Antique Letter Opener or Modern Hobby Project?

Thank you for viewing this thread! Found this in the silverware bin at Goodwill. It was intriguing enough to spend 50 cents on, but I don't what qualities to look for in regards to being antique vs a homemade project made to look old. There's no edge to the blade and it's thicker than a modern butter knife by at least twice. I'm assuming it's a letter opener, but my opinion is a novice one. Any insights or suggestions are appreciated! Thank you!

 

Correction: There does seem to be an edge on the top edge of the blade.

I agree with letter opener but, while it does look "handwrought", I don't think it was "home made".

 

I cannot find any distinguishable markings on the smooth finished areas and the pitted pattern areas play with your eyes. It makes you think you see something, but looking at the overall area, it's probably just the pattern, if that makes any sense. Thanks for your reply!

 

I'm a novice, too, but... it's definitely metal? Magnetic? Heavy? Do you have any way to test what sort of metal it is? Is there any evidence of painted surface? Those are the questions I usually hear experts ask, for starters.

 

Modernish Indian brassware, I'd say.

 

Thanks for the tips! It's non magnet, weighs in the neighborhood of an average cheap butter knife, and it seems to have more of a plating than paint. Brass maybe??? I don't have any testing equipment for metals. Thank you for your reply!

It's a nice letter opener....nothing more.

 

Two blokes in a shed for sure, but a shed in India.

 

Has some scrap value.
