I was going to say that, but didn't. Glad you did though.

It’s a garter belt, specifically. Clan badges do us that, often, but I’m not sure this is a clan motto. Hm.

It also got used by jewelry makers, potteries, and almost anyone who wanted to dress up a logo. The garter logo just means it's British at this point, as far as I know.

I learned that one in another bunch of joolies. A damp cotton swab, dipped into sodium bicarbonate (aka baking soda) and rubbed on bakelite usually produces the same yellow/brown reaction and formaldehyde smell as simichrome and others. It is however readily available and totally nontoxic. Also dead cheap. It's even been known to work on red bakelite, and that generally doesn't react with the others.

Actually, baking soda works pretty well in oven cleaning, too. My mom used it a lot, these were times when there was no oven cleaner in the shops.
It neutralises grease, there is scientific explanation of this, alkaline versus acids.

It's recommended by a lot of people for cleaning. No nasty chemicals or bad fumes/gases to make the user sick.

I could bore you with the equations, I’ll resist. But yea, a paste of bicarbonate on a mucky oven, warm. Leave it a few hours, wipe off. See also ammonia.
