Wood deity carving please comment

  1. This unique deity carving is 48” tall and very detailed. I like it but is $500 too much?? Any idea what it is and is it worth that much?

    Thank you!

Probably an entire teak log in that carving...an' what's the carver's time worth?
If it's at all old, the $500 sounds about right...to me, anyway. Nice find!

    Wow,that’s big.
A lot of work that. Personally it doesn’t look very old to me at all. Also $500 seems a lot to me (but also I don’t know much)

Addiction to Foreign Objects is a lot like a gambling addiction; risk only what you can afford, an' not a dime more!

Right, not very old, but Balinese carvings rarely are.
This is one you would buy for its beauty and artistry, as you would do with most Balinese carvings. It is a good piece with a nice face, but not a masterpiece.
He represents king Rama, an avatar of Hindu deity Vishnu.

Do you have more photos of him? Are you sure there is no damage? No broken fingers or fingertips, little spike on top of crown present, etc.?
Without more photos, and please full image, I have no idea of a value.

  8. You seem to know a lot. I appreciate your comments. There is a tiny chip to the tip of a crown but other than that, no chips or cracks. I will have better pictures if I go buy it so I will need to decide if it’s worth $500. I think it is only because I don’t see others like it in that price range.

    if u like it for 500...then it's worth 500..........

    Ditto.

It isn't unique, or even rare. There is probably a picturesque carver's yard in Bali with several similar ones.
It has damage. Even though the damage is small, that affects the value. And the size is a problem if you want to sell, because the market for carvings this size is small.
I find that this size can sell for a similar price as 80cm carvings of the same quality (yours is ca 123cm). And for most people 80cm is huge. My own Balinese carvings are under 50cm, most are between 20 and 30.
