This is an entire original December, 1938 issue of FOTO Magazine that features a young iconic Betty Grable on it’s cover. I have several interesting magazines in my collection, this issue, and cover I find striking. As for it’s rarity, I consider it a rare find since I have not yet seen another in this great of condition, or another one at all.

    Striking cover.

How to tell your child the facts of life is probably an interesting read.

Vintage Maven, I wonder if Betty Grable (or the movie studio she was under contract to) had an insurance policy on her legs in case of an injury of some sort to one or both of her legs. I have not tried to look that up but you might want to.

I also wonder if the "old" word "gams" (referring to legs) was started by movie studios (perhaps a "shortened" form of "glamorous"?). ;)

It was stated somewhere I remember reading that her legs were in fact insured for $1 Million, her first starring role was in fact in a movie by the title of Million Dollar Legs, as for gams, I am guessing it was slang for the era.

Thank you for that information. Whoooeee, a million dollars back then was . . . . :jawdrop:

I’ve actually never read the article within. I have turned the magazines pages a few times since I’ve owned it, and it goes right back into it’s protective case. I’m too leary of ripping it I guess.

Maybe 'gam' is related to gamba (leg in Italian), gamb (animal leg in heraldry), and gammon, all words for leg or part of it.

When I first went to England, 'gammon' was often on the menu. It (usually) tasted alright, but was a bit overly pink.

    Gave me the willies...

That would give me the creeps too, but I probably wouldn’t be close to that being a vegetarian lol
