I'd love to get opinions on what this cup may have been made for and possible origins. The detail shows a line of acid etched numerals ranging from 25 to 200 in increments of 25. I assume these to be ml marks and therefore likely European origin. This is clear glass base with infused pink swirls. The pontil is ground clean. It measures just under 4" high.

This is the first time ever seen or even imagined an art glass measuring cup!
I can't be of any help, except to tell that if you search Victorian cranberry swirl glass, you can find other glass things made with this technique.

    Hi,
I am at a loss also. I have seen my share of measuring glasses but I never recall see one like this. I wonder perhaps it was done by a person and not done by a company?

may have started life as a cranberry swirl tumbler: apply a handle and etch some numbers, and voila you have a measure : )

Possible home made Etched Numbers. Art Glass mug looks to be Plum Opalescent. Very nice. You can now measure the amt. of wine you want to drink.

Yes, I'm sure the numbers are hand etched. Whatever it was used to measure would have to be dark in color, otherwise the numbers are very difficult to read.

Very Interesting, thanks lauragarnet! The location and style of the ml marks is similar. My glass is fairly thin and though smooth, you can just feel the bands on the inside. The only glasses I have found so far with pink bands in clear glass were done by Nicolaus Lutz at the Boston-Sandwich Glass Company, though his pieces were much more refined than what I have.

I have three tumblers, all different, with gradations on them. They are from the spas in Europe, where the wealthy went to "take the waters." You could have your own glass to measure your mineral water so you knew how much you were taking. This may be of a similar nature.
