Featured Pueblo Hopi Bowl?

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by Heather Cantwell, Feb 26, 2023.

  1. I've had this bowl that I found at a thrift store maybe 20 years ago. I've always thought it must be an older one, but no signatures. The bottom is uneven and feels very handmade. The colors are uneven which also makes me think it's an older piece. I thought it looked very similar to a Frieda Poleahla. Any info would be greatly appreciated. It's Hopi for sure, and hand-made for sure. Looks like a skilled potter as it appears pretty symmetrical and the designs are well painted. It's very difficult to attribute an unsigned piece to any one particular potter.

  3. Thank you. How old do you think it is?

    I would guess 1950s- 60s.

A difficulty in dating Hopi pottery is the relative consistency of designs and shapes-- they haven't changed much. Still, you can make a guess by comparing it to other signed pieces that, because of their signatures, can be more or less dated.
