I doubt for ciggies either. The hidden compartment would work for matches, but there's no striker. And a wooden box wouldn't be that wise.

Yes, I think a little puzzle box too. And a simple one. Puppy would lead one away from an adult object to one for children.

Why not wood? Most cigarette boxes made for desks are wood lined. I guess in your pocket your risk crushing a wooden box in that style but I guess you kind of risk crushing most boxes in your pocket.

Scottie dogs were most popular and common when? I assume 20’s/30’s? I listed a Scottie item recently and attributed it to that era. Hoping it’s right.

1930s was the height of their popularity.

Not sure he’s a Scottie, that’s a very generic puppy face. He’s got a bit of an anime look which makes me wonder if he’s post war, when Japanese imagery got so cutesy.

The example from eBay features Scotties. The other is -- I agree -- a generic cutesy puppy.

Gotcha. That does make me think Charlie's one is post war.

You may very well be right. 1950ish. For the reason you stated.

A ciggie box with a match compartment would also have a striker. Striker means sparks and flame...and a wooden box. Not a wise move. Cigarette boxes with wood liners, dead common for a long time, didn't have lighters attached next to the wood.

My mama used to pop boxes like this in her handbag, rather than crushing the ciggies in their carton.

    I suppose that’s a legitimate concern!

I have one also. It's a trick/magic box. Put a small piece of paper in the front of the drawer while it's showing two compartments. Close the drawer, then while holding the other end with your fingers, push a little one way. Open the drawer again and the paper has disappeared and it is now one compartment.
