I've ID'd maker as Simpson Hall Miller...

So this acquaintance has a large set (over 80 pcs) of this pattern with this monogram. Does not have original box. I believe I've correctly ID'd as Simpson Hall Miller. Can anyone confirm?

I could not find the pattern.

Trying to advise her on selling, I hate to say but possibly melt down is the best value. Seems like there is only one pattern (Frontenac) from this maker that seems to go well above melt. Also a few spoons (2-3 tsp) have damage.

Since this mark was also used by International Silver (which was formed in 1898 and included SHM) you might want to use International in your search terms.

Good heavens! She could at least try! I've been known to "borrow" relatives occasionally. Needham, Nussbaum, Newport, Nevers, Noonan, Nybe...

 

The owner doesn't sell on Ebay. It's possible that the melt place might try to sell it as a set, so it might live on. She might also hang on to it. Undecided at this point.

If I was going to offer to buy it (even for melt price) to try to sell myself on Ebay as a set, I'd be in the same boat, the trouble of listing, big investment (the melt on this is probably $900 or more) and then let's say I sell it for $150 over melt, after Ebay's fee's I'd barely break even. And all of that with the time lost and the worry of a return/charge back, etc. having shelled out $900. Not worth it for a profit of $30.

It is a real eye opener for me. No wonder people are melting things. But in fairness, not many people want a sterling set for every day use or an entire set for use once a year. It is a form of recycling, but I agree, kinda stings to see the quality like that get melted.

I'm going to leave it up to the owner. Honestly, with the research I've done, she may feel nostalgic about it and want to keep it. Kind of a neighbor/friend situation so I'm doing her a favor with advice, not making a fortune on this one.
