This bowl measures 8 1/2" x 9" x 3 3/4" high. It has Spode impressed with the number 48 also impressed, and then Spode in blue as well. I'm a little confused by both the impressed and underglaze marks as well as the number. Can anyone help with dating this piece?

    Thanks!

Hello Ascot, my guess would be early to mid 1800s. There are many sites that will show you Spode's different backstamps and the time frames they were used from their beginning. I found this bowl on a site that is dated circa 1820. Although it's obviously not identical or blue willow, Spode would have used the same backstamps and impression techniques on most all of their pieces within these different time frames. I hope this helps.
    Kind Regards,
    Jeramy

Thank you so much! My research showed the impressed mark as being earlier than the underglaze mark, but I wasn't able to find both marks together.

The numbers can refer to a certain piece such as "square bowl" or even "blue willow square bowl", a pattern number, or simply used as a "batch number" for quality control reasons. The same bowl may have been produced with a different transfer or pattern so this could have been a way to archive what went where or how many of what received certain patterns, or even which kiln they were fired or glazed in. Spode has an extensive history that dates back to the 1700s and there's a ton of information online if you have the time. Research like this can be very time consuming but worth it in my opinion.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Welcome to Antiquers, @JDC -- Jeramy. I'm mostly a learner/lurker on the Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain questions. It's nice to get all of the links for further reading.
