Been several threads with enamel spoons recently, so thought I'd show some of mine. Considered reviving the old 'Spoons' thread https://www.antiquers.com/threads/spoons.23246/ but decided to start a new one - would love to see more enamel spoons...

This Hans Christian Andersen 'Ugly Duckling' spoon is one I've wanted for literally decades, never seeing it anywhere other than in Rainwater's 'Spoons Around the World' (1976) - made by Peter Hertz of Copenhagen, it's 6.75 inches long, just under 3 troy ounces of .830 silver, and came in a fitted velvet-lined, oilcloth covered wooden box:

Sweet set of plique-à-jour mocha/demitasse spoons by the Danish firm of Arendt Dragsted, probably mid 20th century:

    742019155953.jpg

Plique-à-jour - the 1st a bonbon spoon, American, by Whiting Mfg., and while there are some stunning American plique-à-jour pieces, those are uncommon and more often they're just a bit clumsy like the next three spoons; the 5th and 6th are by David Andersen for the tourist trade, one acid-etched 'Island of Mackinac', the other engraved Firenze' (Florence), the 7th has a butterfly in the handle, made by unidentified firm 'S&Co', almost certainly also Norwegian, and engraved 'Wien' (Vienna), the 8th marked only '800', likely made in Germany, engraved 'Geneve', and the 9th has a champlevé handle and plique-à-jour bowl, nice quality but not sure of its origin, likely Norwegian, marked 'STERLING' and 'IH&Co':

All Norwegian enamel, save for one - #1 Th. Marthinsen, #2 Jacob Tostrup, #3 David-Andersen, #4 David Andersen, #5 Aksel Holmsen, #6 Norne (Aksel Holmsen), #7 S&Co, #8 Hansen & Andersen (Danish maker), #9 Egon Lauridsen, #10 Øystein Balle, #11 Elvik & Co., #12 David Andersen:

    74201916837.jpg

Mixed group, first seven are American - #1 engraved 'Dec.29, '07', no maker, #2 by Shepard w/U.S. shield, #3 engraved 'Denver', no maker, #4 Swastika (from when they were a symbol of luck) by Paye & Baker, #5 Whist spoon by Paye & Baker, #6 enamel to equal Norwegian by Watson, #7 Brownie 'Scotchman', no maker. The rest are European made - #8 London, assayed in Birmingham 1918, #9 Vienna by Alexander Sturm, #10 Munich monk, #11 Bern bear, German-made, #12 Lucerne lion, German-made, #13 Naples with filigree handle, #14 playing cards, .800, likely German-made, #15 portrait of Napoleon, German-made, and #16 Egypt 'Moses-in-basket' (missing the tiny baby), German-made:

A heavy well-made teaspoon by Georg Adam Scheid of Vienna, known for fine enamel-work, as with the lovely portrait of a girl:

    742019162123.jpg

And these three Italian spoons, not enamel, but glass anyway - the center one a gilt brass with mosaic, the other two silver set with Murano glass:

    Simply TOO LOVELY, Cheryl!

As you know, I have many, many, MANY myself - all packed away (alas, alas) and not handy for photographing.

Someday, I will once again have a place to display them.

Thank you for sharing these! I lucked out this week on the David Andersen and Egon Lauridsen finds, the only other pretty spoons I’ve collected so far are a little set of Cooper Brothers & Sons Sheffield spoons, sterling but no enamel. I think from the marks mine are either 1912 or 1905. Perhaps I’ll luck out again sometime and find some as magnificent as the lovely little works of art you’ve gathered.

Heh, a very minor collection compared to many. Check out collector Bob Corson's site on his plique-à-jour spoons: http://bobcorson.com/

Well, that settles it. I need to set aside a spoon fund along with my kids college fund and my retirement plan.

Careful, it can be addictive, swore I'd keep mine at 500, culling out as I added, then it crept up closer to 600, would guess more like 700 now - oh wait, inherited Mom's spoons, so more like 800. No - it's worse, she also had well over 300 salt spoons!

If you look at the second Silver Magazine article on Bob Corson's site, it opens with an 1895 Liberty ad for Norwegian enamel that shows a ladle in the same pattern as your new David Andersen pieces (should say that Marius Hammer also produced the same pattern, not unusual for those two firms).

Pulled out Mom's box of salt spoons:

    752019153213.jpg

Some enamels, ranging in size from 2 to 3 inches. Top row - #1 gilt brass, most likely French, #2 & 3 Faked Russian cloisonné, #4 & 5 Soviet era Russian, #6 champlevé from India, #7 cheap cast silver w/resin enamel, #8 Canadian souvenir, no maker's mark, #9 Danish by Anton Michelsen, #10 Danish by MEKA, #11 same design by MEKA, but silverplate w/resin enamel.

Bottom row - #12 Gibralter souvenir, German-made, #13 &14 Canadian souvenirs, no maker's mark, #15 & 16 Canadian souvenirs by Lamond Fils, #17 Canadian w/enamel fish by Breadner Mfg., #18 Norwegian by Clement Berg, #19 Danish by Anton Hansen, #20 Norwegian by David Andersen:

    75201912224.jpg

Though not a particularly good fit, the little looped handle Norwegian plique-à-jour spoon, most likely by David Andersen, is set in a guilloché enamel salt by Austrian Georg Adam Scheid; the pink enamel mid 20th century set is Danish by Volmer Bahner; the pretty little gilt brass French set with glass salt is cold-painted enamel; and the beautiful champlevé set is Danish by Peter Hertz:

Wow! Didn't she also collect all sorts of salts to go with them? (Besides the enamel ones, I mean - which, by the way, are gorgeous!)

Yes, she was most active collecting them in the '80s and ' '90s, but started off with salts back in the '70s, limiting herself to clear glass, then started in with the swans in any material, then managed to latch onto my few in silver (I didn't mind, but kept my Viking ship salts), adding more of them, and then decided to start acquiring a spoon for each one. I researched and cataloged all her salts and spoons years ago, but didn't keep up with the last few (and the notebooks are packed away somewhere) - can't recall if she was up over 400 or 500 salts, but believe now that it was 400+, and haven't counted but know that she was running quite a bit behind on the spoons...
