I see a part number HA 926, is there a name on the tool?

It resembles a strapping tool or bander. These are to tighten steel (or other material) bands, often to secure something to a shipping pallet.

It'd be the most complex and well-made bander I've ever seen. Perhaps for some sort of industrial or specialty bands.

Does it seem like it will wind up or tension something?

 

well it needs a lot of fine calibration fer doin whatever it's supposed to be doin..

 

I was also thinking along those lines.

Agreed, a very complicated strapping tool? or tensioning device?

So it would "winch" the strap, if that's what it is?

 

It does look like a strapping/tension tool but it doesn't appear to have a handle. Unless it's a part that mounts in a strapping machine.

Maybe @springfld.arsenal can help

No. It would be way too uncomfortable to grip and do repetitive tasks. Unless, of course, the rubber grip is missing.

Or it could be a lever that was attached to the machine it came out of. In that case, comfort is not an issue

 

I'm with you, however in the olden days they weren't big on ergonomics.

We're almost certain it's something our orthodontist used on us when we were kids...

 

1. Mr. Jivvy just explained the purpose of the various individual parts to me. I cannot repeat all of that because I barely caught any of it... I recall that there was a moment when I made a chugga-chugga-choo-choo train noise to demonstrate I understood what was being said about a particular bit... that's gone.
2. Mr. Jivvy does not believe it is a strap/tension tool. He suspects it is more for continuous movement than "ratchet and hold"
   
3. Mr. Jivvy has no idea the overall purpose.
4. MR JIVVY WANTS IT.
5. Mr. Jivvy expressly requested that #4 be in ALL CAPS. I added the bold of my own accord. I believe it accurately reflects Mr. Jivvy's mood.

 

Lol. The more I look at it, it does appear to be just part of a machine.

The adjustment screw that looks like a dial (has 25, 35, 40, etc) is intriguing. Plus it has the other indexed gauge adjustment.

I love mechanical parts, but when I don't know what they are used on, my head hurts.
