argh... I THINK this is London silver? 1905 but cannot find the CD mark. Am I even close? LOL It is only 1 3/4" diameter 2 1/4" tall. What would it be used for? It had some old safety pins in it so maybe just a pin box? thanks!! london.jpg london1.jpg

Yes, London. Post 1822 (the leopard on the right has no crown) but there's no "monarch's head" so it also after 1890-ish.

Thank you! I think I found that particular K to be 1905. =) any idea what it might be used for?

Yes 1905 and the maker is Charles Henry Dumenil (registered until 1937) who specialized in "toilet" and dressing sets.

Ooops, gee, Baker beat me on Dumenil! I didn't see Baker's reply #4 when I sarted replying. Wellll, that isn't completely true. I saw that reply, but only read the first part about 1905. At the same time I was at that silver maker's site looking at CDs. Leave it to me in being late to a silver party.

Don't worry, Susan. It always feels good to have you or Cheryl confirm an opinion. ;)

Very nice hallmarks. It'll look lovely once it's cleaned up.

I'd say something like this probably went in a toiletry case, although this the first time I've ever seen one which was silver on the bottom, as well. Usually it's just the lids. Maybe it's something else?

It wasn't that long ago when we 3 Sues/Susans used to fall all over each other replying to silver questions relying on Cheryl and Pat to set us straight. I missed having the other Sue around. Needless to say I still miss Pat. :bigtears:

Simply a more expensive case. All silver would be noticeably lighter than glass and silver. I'd rate silver topped glass bottles as very common, dozens of them at any antiques fair, and the all silver as scarce, but that scarcity does not really add much to the price.

I've seen plenty of silver-topped ones, you're right. They're quite common. But this? First time. Ever!

I suspect it's from a gentleman's case. Not fluffy enough for milady.

DSC04063.JPG Wildrose, I think your little rouge pot/vanity jar is delightful!

I have a few dozen of the little silver-topped glass jars that AF calls "very common" (common or not, I love them, anyway!) Still, I'd also like to have an "all-silver" version...

Here are just a few of my jars & bottles - one small shelf's worth of a large, lighted cabinet. The only "all silver" container shown here is a little holder for a roll of stamps, brought back for me from Europe by a friend in the early 1970's.

    Thanks, komokwa.
The tiny one is sterling with a chunk of polished turquoise on top. I bought it in Mexico in 1991.
The taller one with a blue top is guilloche enamel, American, made by Webster.
