Featured Unknown Artist of Interesting Painting – Can Anyone Help?

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone could help me identity the artist of this painting.

The painting is an oil on board and it appears to have some age to it. The artist’s initials appear on the lower left of the picture but unfortunately, I’ve been unable to identify who he or she might be. On the back of the picture there is a label which reads (I think) as follows:

“‘Orbed Sundown – Westing Broad Atlantic Swells’

Aboard R.M.S Queen Mary

Final Voyage

To New York x Southampton”

There is also a framer’s label on the back.

Would anyone have any suggestions or ideas? I feel that there are potential clues there but unfortunately, to-date, my own research hasn’t revealed the artist’s identity.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I really like that piece like MCM VanGogh.Very confident and bold work.As far as what it's worth & who it's by,I hope you get lucky.Post it on every Art Board you can find.

 

Very nice painting.
Her final voyage was in 1967. It looks like the painter was aboard and painted this from the deck. There should be a passenger list which you can check.

Yes indeed a Passenger's Manifest.

 

The poor thing is filthy but I love it nonetheless.Can you imagine how those colors would pop if it were cleaned ?

 

It could definitely do with some TLC!

 

You might want to contact a historical society/artist group within Devon. Artist most likely long gone but s/he may well be remembered. Here's one found with a quick internet search.

Now that's an idea. I do see it's a Devonshire surname.

That's a very interesting suggestion, I had also thought that it was three letters of the artist's initials but now that I look at it again you might be right. Certainly worth following up on. Thanks
