    Hello!

My name is Eduard and i live in Romania

I have received this satsuma vase from my parents. It was bought at an auction in the '90s.
On the document it says its from the XVIII century but can anyone tell me if that is true ? The document is just a piece of paper with a logo from the auction house and a description of the item.
What period do you think it is from ? and which dynasty.
    It has no markings.
    Height 35cm
Also, I would like to know how much is it worth. It has some flaws. One of the lions tale is missing. and some little cracks at the legs.

    Thank you !

Not sure it’s a vase, looks more like a censer without its lid. Can you show a pic looking into the piece please? 1D70EB64-1B51-4AB8-8B66-420998160371.jpeg

Hi @Eduard_flen and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS!!!:happy: What you've posted, I'm not familiar with, but other members ARE, who will be along eventually!! Just keep checking back!! Is the design the same on the other side of the vase?? We also don't generally do outright values, BUT we will point you to where you can see/find other similar items, which should help you value yours!!

Thank you for the replies. As you can see in the pictures provided, there are 2 sides with 2 different designs. One is with birds and flowers. the other side is with people on it.
    The inside is below

I would call it an urn, at almost 14 inches high.
If Satsuma (probable, from appearance) it's Japanese...so dynasty wouldn't be strictly correct.
Broken tail or not, thats a nice piece...Thanks!

Welcome Eduard! The date given by the auction house is too early for this piece. Much more likely to be late 1800's (19th century) or even more likely into the 20th century.

You should read through the Satsuma section of Gotheborg.com (link attached here : https://www.gotheborg.com/marks/satsuma.shtml )

I agree, probably late 1800's to early 1900's, pre WWII, IMO.

I meant at the top to show if there is a recess for a lid. A vase wouldn’t have any recess.

    I agree.
    Ditto.

Japan's periods are reign periods, both of emperors and shoguns. Assuming your censer/urn dates from the late 19th century, that would place it in the Meiji period. The Meiji period is named after emperor Meiji, 1852-1912.

Chinese periods are first the longer period during which a certain family reigned, which is called a dynasty. So a dynastic period, like Ming or Qing.
Each dynasty is split into reign periods of individual emperors who were born into that family/dynasty.
To name a famous emperor: Emperor Qianlong reigned from 1735-1796. He was the fifth emperor in the Qing dynasty, which reigned from 1644-1912.

Not to pile on, but I agree with the time period others have mentioned - late 1800's to early 1900's, Meiji period.
