IMG_20230215_211924 smaller.jpg My first post, and I am so grateful to find you guys, because there's darn little knowledge out there. This candlestick was in a box of flimsy junk at an estate sale. It was beautiful and heavy -- it's about 11" tall, the base is 7.5" across, and it weighs over three pounds. The stick is (I think this is the term) peened in; it rotates maybe a quarter turn and stops. It's been polished recently, but the stick still has (I think?) lathe marks. I did a reverse Google search, and Google seems to think it could be old. Does anyone recognize the style? I know almost nothing about candlesticks and would welcome some experience weighing in.

Whatever it is, my daughter gets a new heirloom; no way is this leaving my clutches!

So, are you saying this is a Candlestick??? It's difficult to tell from your images....Do you think you could re-post images of the whole candlestick (if that in fact is what it is!) and if it has any marks on it please show them as well! Thank you!! And a question for you....you've been on here for roughly 2+ years and this is your FIRST post???

I've had an account for two years. I don't think I've posted before, no. If I did, it was so long ago that I'd forgotten about this site. Had to reset my password.

Are my photos not posting properly? The first one shows the whole candlestick, and when I click on the thumbnails, they embiggen. No marks. I had to crop them close because this site said my first tries were too large pixel-wise.

Here's a bit of help....if you plan on staying on this WONDERFUL site with TONS of EXPERTISE, you may want to copy and paste this, !!!!

For Future reference, when posting images:

Try emailing them to yourself as "medium" size, they should then be under 1 MB!

Each image MUST be UNDER 1 MB....
There are instructions on site here on how to reduce the size of your image, if that is the problem......you are allowed up to 10 images per post!!! Here are some links to the instructions:

    If on the computer:
    https://www.antiquers.com/threads/posting-a-thread-and-uploading-pictures.15990/

    If on an iPhone:

And if on an Android phone:
    https://www.antiquers.com/threads/using-an-android-phone-for-pics-on-antiquers.41709/

As an added note, when you have your photos LISTED, but BEFORE you hit POST, please click on the wording that says to "POST EVERY IMAGE FULL SIZE" !! That way, we're not clicking on little thumbnails, but get to see all of the images full sized!! Thanks! Remember, it takes a bit for MOST new members to get the hang of it, but it's really quite simple once you get used to it!!!" AND, WELCOME BACK!!! I think you'll enjoy it here!!:happy:

Thank you. If you want, I'll delete the whole thing and start over -- it seems pretty snarled at this point.

I love the bizarre title of the book - 'THE KALAHARI TYPING SCHOOL FOR MEN' and how it's written in higher case. And is that a stuffed bear claw or a 6 legged armadillo holding it ?? :joyful::joyful::joyful: [IMG]

It looks turned, which means fairly recently made. The old ones were cast.
    Definitely a 6 legged armadillo.:smug:

That is part of a series of detective novels, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. It's a great series set in Botswana, I highly recommend it!!!

Meanwhile, FUN aside, :jawdrop::rolleyes::rolleyes: as @petrichor asked, got any comps anywhere he can compare to his candlestick???????????

SO, petrichor, I took @laura9797's hint and keyed into a Google 'search' "India-brass plain turned candlesticks" and got this for a result....but you CAN be more specific if you choose to...click on it....you should see a bunch to check out!!

(But know that we can get a bit silly on occasion....as we're SO SERIOUS MOST of the time!!!)

I like your candlestick, it has a nice look to it:) I have no idea on the age of yours. I remember buying brass candlesticks from India in the early 1970s, and while it seems like that was just a few years ago the reality is that was 50+ years ago:) When I'm looking at stuff I go through the list in my head - new/fresh off the boat to 'modern/recent' to old to antique. So to me 'recent' doesn't mean new but has some age to it. lol, I hope this makes sense:) Maybe this is why the term vintage became so popular.
Anyway, maybe @laura9797 and @Any Jewelry could shed some light on what they mean by recent?

For me it is roughly between 1995 and now.

Can you be a little more explicit on why you think it's so recent? Wouldn't something so new have a maker's mark?

I checked on your point about older stems being cast, not spun. That's true, and thank you for teaching me something. But apparently old cast stems were then finished on a metal lathe for a bunch of reasons, including recycling any metal shavings.

I'm glad you like it. :) Whatever its origin, I call it astonishing beginner's luck.
