I'm almost sure that this toothpick is newer (my blacklight is not working). But I was wondering if this one is a reproduction of an earlier toothpick. I don't have a book on TPs so was hoping someone here has one and could give me more info on the old version. When I check the net, all I see are toothpicks just like this one but in different colors. Thank you!

The original was by Richards & Hartley and it's not an otter but a kitten, "kitten on pillow".

Did I say Otter? Of course, I meant Kitten, of course. Everyone on eBay called it an Otter so I never questioned it. Thanks anund and tallcakes! The catalog reprint version looks more like a cat. But now that I know it's supposed to be a cat, it looks like a cat now.

I have a lot of EAPG daisy & button pieces that were my mother's. I wish she'd collected items like this, which would be a lot more fun than my plain ol' plates, bowls, etc!

Apparently the 'artist' has never seen a cat, otterwise he/she would have not shortchanged the animal in the way of ears, nor would he/she have created an impossibly fat tail.

    JMHO LOL

Now that I know this is a cat, I've been finding info on the web. Guess I'd better go get a blacklight. The modern reproductions are very different looking than this one. For instance, they have virtually no ears (silverthwait, the new cats are deaf), no distinction in the glass for fur, a thicker tail (silverthwait, how is that possible?), and is not known in clear, just clear frost. That's on the "it might be original side."

On the "it might not be original" side, it shows no wear and virtually no damage - just a teeny, weeny, tiny fleabite on an ear.

What a coolio mystery... my two cents... otters DO float on their backs just like that while they snack on bivalves!

Seriously, now, folks! I am looking at my cat right now. He has ears. He has elbows. His tail is almost the same diameter root to tip. Now look at that critter up there where that poor man is going to lose his pants any second. And then look at the glass piece and the otter on his back with his eyes covered. (Maybe someone just called him a cat!)

Yeah... like the artist was told to make an otter by the design chief... then production was finished... then shipping chief took a look and thought it was a kitty... then they were shipped and sold as such. Sounds as if the government was involved... maybe OSHA prevents design from talking to shipping.

I bought a blacklight today and the good news is that the otter-cat glows yellow. You know this just has to be an otter and someone messed up when naming this piece. But most sellers call it Kitten on a Pillow cuz the manufacturer said it is a cat. It looks more like a cat in tallcakes' catalog page. Somewhere between the drawing and the making, something bad happened.

Did you also notice on the catalog page that there is a horseradish jar with a horse head finial? That's amusing.

This has been a fun thread. TY!
